In a previous post I had mentioned this great book. Recently I got a copy and I decided to write a review about its content, which I find especially useful. The review is written both in English and Greek below.
Digital Brushes Sourcebook is a new book by Rotovision and Emily Portnoi, which is dedicated to the Adobe Illustrator’s brushes mechanisms. It has a clean, tight and light layout, which helps readers to read with full info about the Brushes field, what brushes are, their categories, how to use and how to create your very own brushes for any design/illustration project. As you know, Brushes are very important in Illustrator because of their flexibility and their importance in illustration/design is great.
This 250-page book has a nice structure introducing the fascinating Illustrator’s Bushes world. First chapters explain in full detail each category (Calligraphic, Scatter, Art & Pattern). Next, readers can see brushes in real artwork with full explanation how to create relative brushes with detailed settings. The last part of the book lists tips and tricks on how to use brushes properly and overcome common problems. What’s the most important, the book is accompanied by a CD containing 300 original, royalty-free illustrator brushes contributed by various artists around the world. I’ m lucky since it contains a piece of artwork of mine along with some ready to be used brushes.
Digital Brushes Sourcebook is a valuable guide for any professional designer/illustrator who wants to harness the power of brushes in a efficient way. All info is in clear, high detail without overwhelming texts. Just straight to the point. The accompanied brushes are really a great resource for any artist.

Πρόσφατα κυκλοφόρησε το βιβλίο Digital Brushes Sourcebook, το οποίο αφιερώνει τις σελίδες του εξολοκλήρου στην τέχνη των Brushes για το Adobe Illustrator.
Με πολύ απλό και ανάλαφρο στήσιμο, η συγγραφέας Emily Portnoi σας δείχνει με πλήρεις οδηγίες, τι είναι τα Brushes ακριβώς, σε ποιες κατηγορίες χωρίζονται, τι μπορείτε να κάνετε με αυτά και πώς βέβαια να φτιάξετε τα δικά σας για τα projects που χρειάζεστε. Τα Brushes γενικά είναι ένα μεγάλο κεφάλαιο στο Adobe Illustrator η δύναμη και η χρησιμότητά τους είναι αδιαμφισβήτητη και σίγουρα αποτελούν μεγάλη βοήθεια στην σχεδίαση και εικονογράφηση.
Το βιβλίο αποτελείται από 250 σελίδες και η βασική δομή του είναι η εισαγωγή στον κόσμο των Illustrator Brushes, οι κατηγορίες και η επεξεργασία τους. Στην συνέχεια αφιερώνεται ολόκληρη ενότητα για καθεμία από τις τέσσερις κατηγορίες (Calligraphic, Scatter, Art, Pattern brushes), ενώ στο τέλος υπάρχουν ολόκληρες σελίδες με κόλπα και συμβουλές για καλύτερα αποτελέσματα και αντιμετώπιση προβλημάτων. Μάλιστα σε κάθε κατηγορία υπάρχουν πραγματικά παραδείγματα από Brushes σε projects που έχουν χρησιμοποιηθεί, βλέποντας με τον καλύτερο τρόπο τι μπορείτε να φτιάξετε. Επίσης συμπεριλαμβάνει όλα τα brushes που παρουσιάζονται αναλυτικά με την συνδρομή δεκάδων καλλιτεχνών, συμπεριλαμβανομένου και εμένα, σε ένα CD για να χρησιμοποιήσετε στα δικά σας έργα. To CD περιέχει περίπου 300 αρχεία και με τόσο μεγάλη ποικιλία υλικού, σίγουρα κάποια από αυτά θα σας φανούν χρήσιμα.
Γενικά το βιβλίο αυτό είναι κατάλληλο για όλους αυτούς που χρησιμοποιούν το Illustrator και θέλουν να μάθουν τα πάντα για τον κόσμο των Brushes σε ανώτερο επαγγελματικό επίπεδο. Πάντα όμως με απλές επεξηγήσεις, λιτά κείμενα και ουσιαστικά παραδείγματα. Ιδανικό γι’ αυτούς που ψάχνουν όμορφα brushes για εικονογράφηση και κυρίως για μελάνωμα σχεδίων, κόμιξ κτλ
